Abstract. Steam-disinfestation of soil as an alternative to chemical fumigation was investigated in both research and commercial strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) production field trials at four sites over 2 years (2011–13) using new prototype commercial application equipment: a tractor-drawn device that physically mixed the steam with the soil as it passed through the shaped planting beds.
A viable alternative for soil fumigation is steam, which is known to be highly effective and environmentally safe. However, steam has not been embraced for outdoor applications due to multiple disadvantages including size and capital cost of equipment, slow steam rates and operating costs, water quality requirements, and low fuel efficiencies.
Jan 27, 2021· This page details construction of the 55 gallon barrel sterilizer, pictured at your left, that we are using at Mountain-Mushroom-Farm in Ferry County, Washington. Total cost for the entire system, including the propane burner and steel support frame was under $400, and it can sterilize 100 pounds of mushroom spawn or substrate at a time.
Jan 03, 2009· One time I sterilize a 55 gallon drum of soil with this method, rolling the container along the drive to help the steam do its work. If you have access to cheap fuel, perhaps brush piles or scrap wood, you can rig up a bunch of 5-gallon containers to boil and pour them all over this small field.

of their life cycle in the soil. Vegetable growers generally sterilize the soil once a year ; it is advantageously done in midsummer between crops. Sterilization of soil by steam is considered the most effective and most economical method. The earliest use^of steam for soil sterilization apparently dates back to 1893.
The Chinese representative of the steam specialist MSD Corp., Beijing Zhongjinguoyi Sciences Development Co. Ltd., has decided to acquire soil sterilisation methods using hot steam that are new to China. In mid-May 2016, steaming experts from Germany participated in the start-up of the first steaming equipment for sterilising substrates in Yunnan.

Soil solarization is an environmentally friendly method of using the sun's power to control pests such as bacteria, insects, and weeds in the soil. The process involves covering the ground with a tarp, usually a transparent polyethylene cover, to trap solar energy (Fig. 1). The sun heats the soil to

The mixer insures that the substrate is uniform, so that the mushrooms can get the sustenance they need throughout the grow bag, bottle or tray. Substrate mixers may also be used to uniformly mix spawn with the substrate if the substrate is not sterilized. Sterilized substrates in bags are normally inoculated with spawn in a clean atmosphere.
Soil steam sterilization is a technique to sterilize the soil by using hot steam in the open field, high tunnels or greenhouses. First applied in Germany in 1888, it was the primary method for disinfecting the field prior to the arrival of soil fumigants . Fungi, bacteria, weeds, a few viruses and nematodes can all be controlled using hot steam.
