The mine was named after U.S. Senator William Gwin, who purchased the property in 1867. Most of the gold produced in the district came from this mine, which was also one of the most productive Mother Lode mines in the county. The mine was operated on a large scale during the 1860s and 1870s, and from 1894 to 1908.

The mine controlled a total of 126.3 acres (Logan, 1934). The Plymouth Mine was discovered and first developed in 1852, but very little work was done until 19 years later.
