The Benue Trough lies to the west of the Cameroon line ... The Benue Trough was formed by rifting of the central West African basement, beginning at the start of the Cretaceous era ... A common explanation of the trough's formation is that it is an aulacogen, an abandoned arm of a three-armed radial rift system ... Main Site Subjects.
It is suggested that the Benue Trough may have been initiated by the extension of the equatorial oceanic fracture zones onto the continent during the early stages of the separation of Africa and South America. A transcurrent movement along deep-seated faults of the basement is responsible for the structure of the trough. After a period of extension characterized by the sedimentary infilling of ...

01-01-1985· The Benue Trough is characterised by some degree of continuity of palaeontological zonation within the marine formations, a series of long narrow folds with ENE-WSW axes, and a narrow zone of lead-zinc mineralisation with associated intrusions which runs from Abakaliki to Zurak (Cratchley and Jones, 1965).
Abstract: There are many sources of underground water in the Middle Benue Trough, which have varying composition and constituents.Water samples from saline springs, boreholes, hand-dug wells and rivers / streams from the Middle Benue Trough are collected and analysed for cations, anions and heavy metals, using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS); with aim of determining the concentration of ...

The Benue Trough was formed by rifting of the central West African basement, beginning at the start of the Cretaceous period. At first, the trough accumulated sediments deposited by rivers and lakes. During the Late Early to Middle Cretaceous, the basin subsided rapidly and was covered by the sea.
The Benue Trough of Nigeria is a rift basin in central West Africa that extends NNE–SSW for about 800 km in length and 150 km in width. The southern limit is the northern boundary of the Niger Delta, while the northern limit is the southern boundary of the Chad Basin (Fig. 4.1).

The geology of the Benue Trough of Nigeria which is a failed arm of the rift-rift-fault (RRF) responsible for the separation of South America and African continents has been a subject of scientific and economic interest. A lot of work covering the area has been done but detailed work is still needed.

The Benue trough is thought to be the failed arm of the triple junction which also led to the separation of the African and the South American plates (Burke et al., 1970). This present work is an attempt to understand the structural framework and the geometry of the basin which can be an aid to further exploratory efforts in the basin.
