Also, don't attempt to clean a stone when there's any chance of freezing temperatures in the forecast. Water expands when it freezes, so the water could get inside the minuscule cracks in the stone and grow.
A Note about this machine and our lapidary shop - This is the machine we use to polish geodes, petrified wood specimens, and other flat cut rock specimens off of our saws. We use a vibrating lap to remove the saw marks from the saw. Then all we have to do is a quick dry sand step on the bull wheel to bring up a nice smooth sanded gloss.

For polishing large, fairly flat surfaces on harder stones, I use a pneumatic, center water feed polisher. The polisher has a Velcro head that accepts pads containing diamonds of different grits held in a hard resin, from 40 grit (coarse) to 3000 grit (very fine).
