I have read on line, "The Penokee-Gogebic Range has recently been identified by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as having a high potential for undiscovered copper and nickel deposits. If iron mining were to occur, copper could be produced as a by-product, and pose risks inherent to all metallic sulfide ore mining."
Scott Walker is allowing a 22 mile-long, 1000 foot-deep strip mine to proceed in Northern Wisconsin's Penokee Hills region, which contains the headwaters of the Bad River and Lake Superior. Also the Penokee range is a sacred area for tribes in the area, over a hundred years ago these tribes built effigie mounds in the penokee range. With mining taking place there the tribes feel that miners would infringe upon these effigie mounds making them no longer sacred.
