In 1973, she and her husband Stanley came to Manitoulin where they owned and operated the Meldrum Bay Hotel until 1979, when they moved to Mindemoya. In 1993, she and Stan moved to Gore Bay. Mary liked to knit, do crossword puzzles, loved to walk and the outdoors, and in particular loved animals.
Just past the last turn in the long highway that skirts the northern shores of the Manitoulin Island, and just before the sign that announces the end of Highway 540, sits the Meldrum Bay Inn. In many ways the heart of the small village, the Inn has welcomed visitors for almost 150 years!
A resident of the Manitoulin Lodge, died at his residence on Friday, November 14, 1997 at the age of 92 years. He was born May 10, 1905 at Meldrum Bay, son of the late William and Gertrude (Grant) McDonald, and had lived at Meldrum Bay all his life, until he and Whilimine moved to the Lodge in 1995. Neil had worked for the DHO until his retirement.
